Hilltop Neighborhood, Tacoma
Consider this neighborhood, the wise Grandma in the family. Her experience of change, leaves those who are willing to experience and hear her stories, better off because of them. Historically diverse and rapidly changing, the Hilltop neighborhood that was once known for its gang violence and dangerous activity, is now a flourishing community of businesses and neighbors. Flooded with local restaurants, coffee shops and local space for the community to learn and gather (Public Library and Bates Technical College) the face of Hilltop has changed. And yet, remains the stories, grit and love that there always was.
Here, I guide you through a perfect evening or midday exploration of Hilltop, Tacoma. Weather your out with your friends, or on a hot date, these three businesses will help you see the heart of Hilltop, while enjoying great food, drink, coffee and chocolate. Enjoy!
The three business featured, are within walking distance from my most recently listed home; 1515 Ainsworth Ave – A large renovated Craftsman home.
Red Elm Cafe – An Industrial space located just off of 11th and MLK. Coffee, tea, small bites and breakfast are offered. If I really want to treat myself, I’ll get the Belgain Waffle with a latte (SO good!). Breakfast and lunch sandwiches are also on the menu. The owners, three sisters (Jennifer, Adina and Sarah) opened the coffee shop together. Their vision; to create a space of community where ALL are welcome. Their involvement in the community and ongoing efforts to do good, inspired their efforts to open their own coffee shop. A fun group of fans that feel good about supporting, one latte and Belgian Waffle at a time!
Now let’s switch moods a little. I imagine you are in the mood for a swanky cocktail or a light lunch every once in a while? 1022 South J doesn’t disappoint with their food, drink or ambiance. Their drinks will warm you up from the inside out. “One can expect to enjoy carefully crafted cocktails with innovative food creations with an eclectic musical sound-scape. All from the comfort of their urban living room.” – according to their website and I agree completely. If you are looking to set a classy yet relaxed mood, bring your hot date or best friends. Small space, unique dim lighting and delicious food/drink will help create a night to remember.
Now! After after a fulfilling dinner, you may have a bit a sweet tooth (At always do). Two blocks away is Johnson Candy Company, a true Tacoma hidden gem! Owned and operated for 3 generations by the Johnson Family. It’s brimming with gift boxes and distinctive non-food gifts. The display cases are full of creams, chews, brittle, nut clusters, caramels, jelly beans, truffles, toffee, raisin clusters and more. There are trays, full of pastel and rainbow-colored ice mints. You’ll leave with your sweet tooth fully satisfied and likely, a few extras.
